Como-Cagliari: Match Preview
After securing their eighth consecutive positive result and fourth clean sheet of the season with a 0-0 draw against league leaders Napoli at the Maradona Stadium, Como 1907 will return to home turf to face Cagliari at Sinigaglia Stadium. The Lariani will be aiming to extend their unbeaten run against the Sardinian side, who come into the fixture following a 2-0 defeat at the Olimpico against Lazio.
Cagliari, led by coach Pisacane, have not won three points in the league since September 19, when they beat Lecce 2-1 away. Since then, they have recorded two draws and four defeats in Serie A, leaving them in 14th place in the table with nine points.
Here are words from Como 1907’s Head Coach Cesc Fabregas before Como-Hellas Verona:
“We must continue to have the mentality of taking the field to win and be protagonists. Cagliari are a team that work very well, with excellent players and a lot of experience. Lately they’ve done many interesting things and, at times, it’s difficult to analyze them in detail. We must be very careful, because they are a very physical side. We need to be good at imposing our game and taking the match where we want it”.
“I want to see a team with personality. I’ve been very clear with the boys: we need consistency, continuity and the right mentality to keep winning and playing our football. That’s how you really grow. We know that when there are many young players there are ups and downs, and my job is to make sure there are many more ups than downs. We’re working on exactly that.”
“I know Fabio very well, we have a wonderful relationship. We attended the UEFA Pro course together for a year and a beautiful friendship was born from that. He’s always very open to dialogue and discussion. When he talks about football, tactics or any other topic, he does it with heart, and you can feel that immediately. I really like people like that, and I’m truly happy for him”.
Cagliari
Pisacane’s team has shown at the start of the season that the team can adapt its approach during a match, switching between 3-5-2 and 4-3-1-2 formations. The squad possesses valuable attacking talent but a defence that struggles to protect Elia Caprile, one of the league’s top goalkeepers in terms of performance.
On the wings, Marco Palestra, on loan from Atalanta, and Riyad Idrissi, born in 2005, are emerging as a promising duo. Both are gifted with great pace and stamina, which allows Cagliari to constantly add extra men on the wings in attack. The same can be said of Mattia Felici, a winger who is usually brought on during the game, who is proving to be a key player for the Rossoblù, as demonstrated in Verona, where the 24-year-old equalized in the 92nd minute with a great goal to secure a 2-2 draw.
Up front, despite the hierarchy being unsettled following the injury to former Como player Belotti, Sebastiano Esposito, Borrelli, Gaetano, Luvumbo, and Kilicsoy form a talented and versatile attacking unit.
Defensively, Cagliari is the penultimate in the league for expected goals conceded (15.1), despite Caprile ranking fourth for saves (32) and third for post-shot expected goals, that is, the expected goals based on how likely the goalkeeper is to save the shot. These statistics underline Caprile’s impressive performances, while also highlighting defensive aspect that need addressing. Despite this, Cagliari has many options and great organization on the field, capable of putting any opponent in difficulty.
Previous encounters
Como and Cagliari have faced each other 51 times in their history across Serie A, Serie B, and the Coppa Italia. The overall record, slightly in favor of the Rossoblù, stands at 20 wins for the Rossoblù, 17 for Como, and 14 draws.
The last two encounters, played last season in Serie A, were particularly exciting. In the first leg, Como earned their first point in the Serie A after 21 years with a 1-1 draw, while in the return leg, the Lariani secured an important 3-1 victory thanks to goals from Gabriel Strefezza, Maxence Caqueret, and Patrick Cutrone.
