Lecce-Como: Match Preview
Lecce and Como return to action on matchday 17 of Serie A Enilive after missing a round of league matches due to the Italian Super Cup. In their last games before the break, the BiancoBlu lost 1-0 away to Roma, while Lecce picked up three crucial points at home against Pisa. Serbian striker Nikola Stulic’s first goal of the season gave the Giallorossi a narrow victory over the Tuscan side, allowing Di Francesco’s team to reach 16 points in the league.
Here are the words of Como 1907 head coach Cesc Fàbregas ahead of Lecce-Como:
“We are expecting a very important match in a great stadium, against a team that has been steadily improving throughout this season, showing identity, organisation and the ability to play quality football. It will require focus, intensity and concentration for the full 90 minutes. It will be a stimulating and demanding challenge, and we will need to be ready in every aspect. Dossena and Sergi Roberto are back and available.”
Lecce
This season, with Lecce currently sitting 14th place in the league, the Salento-based team is finding its balance under the guidance of Eusebio Di Francesco, fielding a balanced and organized 4-2-3-1 formation that often shifts to a 4-3-3 during the game. In the reliable defense that has conceded 19 goals so far, Tiago Gabriel, a Portuguese defender born in 2004, is emerging as a standout player, showcasing his marking and ball-handling skills, given his impressive athleticism. Against Como, Lecce will have to do without three key players from the starting lineup: center back Gaspar, who is suspended, midfielder Coulibaly, who is playing in the Africa Cup of Nations, and Berisha, who is out with an injury. These important absences could lead coach Di Francesco to make changes to the team’s lineup in order to find a balance that can work despite the absences. Lecce are proving in this championship that they know how to stay in games by putting great intensity and fighting spirit on the pitch, at the expense of their offensive production: with 11 goals scored, the Giallorossi have the third least prolific attack in Serie A, after Pisa and Parma. From an offensive point of view, Lecce lines up with two high wingers, such as Tete Morente, Banda, Pierotti, or Sottil, supporting a target man, Nikola Stulic or Francesco Camarda. The BiancoBlu will therefore face a team that is very effective at closing down space and creating density in midfield, making physical strength one of their greatest assets.
