Como-Fiorentina: Match Preview
Como and Fiorentina meet again following their Coppa Italia clash on 27 January, when Como came out on top to reach the quarter-finals. This league fixture comes shortly after the Biancoblù’s Coppa Italia quarter-final win over Napoli, a result that sent Como into the semi-finals for the first time since the 1985–86 season.
The Lariani now return to league action after missing their last match against Milan due to postponement linked to preparations for the Milan–Cortina Olympics.
Fiorentina arrive by the lake still adjusting after a busy January transfer window, during which Paolo Vanoli’s side underwent major changes, reshaping their squad and adding several quality players. The Viola have not won in Serie A since their 18 January victory over Bologna, followed by defeats to Cagliari and Napoli, and a late draw against Torino last time out.
Despite sitting 18th in the table with 18 points, Fiorentina remain a talented side working towards a new style of play, already showing promising signs going forward, particularly in the match against Torino.
Here are the words of Como 1907 head coach Cesc Fàbregas ahead of Como-Fiorentina:
“We’re starting to find consistency in our play, even trying out different things that the players understand really well. But it all comes down to one thing: how much you want it, your mentality, and the awareness that the line between winning and losing is extremely fine, and that every detail matters. That’s a huge credit to the team.”
“Fiorentina are a great team with a strong club behind them. For me, they have always been a historic side, so I understand it’s surprising to see them where they are in the table. But many of their starters had an excellent season last year and tomorrow will be a very important game: we need to go onto the pitch with the right mentality, because they have just as much at stake as we do.”
“We always to take it one game at a time, try to win tomorrow, and then focus on preparing for Milan, who come straight after. We don’t have time to worry about what the other teams are doing; we need to focus on ourselves. That’s where our focus lies.”
Fiorentina
With Moise Kean back in the starting line-up and scoring straight away against Torino, Fiorentina have rediscovered an important focal point in attack. Since Paolo Vanoli’s arrival, the Viola have moved from a back three to a back four, with a midfield built around a playmaker and two attacking interiors. Against Torino, Manor Solomon and Albert Gudmundsson played just behind Kean. With Gudmundsson now injured, Vanoli may turn to another winger such as Jack Harrison, or opt for a player with similar qualities, like Jacopo Fazzini.
Among Fiorentina’s stand-out performers, alongside new signing Solomon — who has impressed with his dribbling, directness and finishing — is Nicolò Fagioli, who is growing in confidence and influence, helping to set the tempo in midfield. He is supported by Marco Brescianini, known for his energy and willingness to get involved, and Rolando Mandragora, who shares the team’s Serie A top-scorer spot with Kean on six goals. January arrival Giovanni Fabbian has also featured in this area, offering the same ability to attack space and arrive in the box.
During the winter transfer window, Fiorentina clearly looked to develop their attacking play down the flanks, with wide forwards backed up by the forward runs of Dodô, Gosens and Parisi.
At the back, Fiorentina have conceded 38 goals in Serie A, with only Torino, Pisa and Hellas Verona allowing more — an area where the team will be hoping to find greater balance. While Vanoli’s side are still shaping their identity, Fiorentina remain a squad full of quality, capable of influencing matches through their technical ability.
