No one had broken the deadlock and as extra time started the tension in the Giuseppe Sinigaglia stadium was palpable. Fans in the stands, including critically acclaimed Hollywood actors Keira Knightly, Adrien Brody, and Michael Fassbender to benches of both teams.
The pivotal moment comes at the 92nd minute. From midfield, Nico Paz sends the ball to Patrick Cutrone who finds himself in the corner of the opponent’s box. Cutrone, facing away from the goal, stops the ball beautifully, turns to beat his defender and looks up to cross the ball. Who does he find in front of the net? None other than Alessandro Gabrielloni.
Gabrielloni gets a foot on the ball and guides it into the back of the net. Time seems to stand still as everyone processes that Como is now ahead 1-0 in a crucial game against AS Roma. The crowd erupts, Gabrielloni and his entire team go crazy, and in a span of a few seconds history is made.
With this goal, Alessandro Gabrielloni has become only the fifth player in Italian football history to achieve the remarkable feat of scoring in every division with one team—joining the ranks of players like Mario Santana, Alessandro Lucarelli, Lorenzo Pasciuti, and Andrea Luci.
Football often hinges on persistence, timing, and a bit of luck. Gabrielloni’s story is one of the best that the beautiful game has to offer.
Alessandro Gabrielloni’s football career started in the Marche region where he was born. There he played football in central and southern Italy for a variety of different teams before signing for Como 1907 in the transfer window of Winter 2018. Como then played in Serie D, the fourth division of Italian football. On January 31, 2018, Gabrielloni stepped onto the pitch at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium for the very first time, a moment that would mark the beginning of a long and storied partnership between player and club.
“I remember the first day I arrived here. It was winter in 2019, raining, and cold. I knew it was a very important opportunity, and I had to adapt quickly. I had a strong desire to play and score goals. Como now feels like a second home for me. I feel a special connection to the club and the fans, a strong bond has formed, deep in my heart.”
Since then, Gabrielloni has played in every tier of the Italian football system for Como 1907. Over six years, he has progressed through Serie D, Serie C, Serie B, and now, at 30, he has finally arrived at the elite level. Always a part of the squad, he managed to convince coaches and club management of his essential contribution. The player now has over 100 career goals.
He is one of the most beloved players for his dedication to the club and now a huge part of Como’s history. When undertaking his degree and defending his final thesis virtually in 2020, during the COVID pandemic, dressing only smartly on the top half, a photo later revealed he was wearing Como shorts on his bottom half during the presentation.
In a recent interview, Gabrielloni was asked “What is happiness for you?”. His answer was simple: “I’ll answer with two things. The ball going into the net and everything that comes with it, and Sunday lunches with my family”.
Against AS Roma he may not have been eating with his family but they were there to witness that magical moment. With tears in his eyes in the stands watching his son score the goal and celebrate amongst the fans, Gabrielloni’s father exclaimed “I told you he’s going to score today, I knew it!”
