Como 1907 Women: An Exciting First Half of the Season

The final whistle of the Coppa Italia Women match against Inter marked the end of the first half of the season for Como 1907 Women, whose league campaign had already paused a week earlier, when, in front of the home crowd at the Sinigaglia Stadium, Selena Mazzantini’s side secured all three points with a four-goal victory over San Marino Academy.

Despite the defeat, the second-round Coppa Italia match against Inter highlighted many of the traits that have distinguished the BiancoBlu in this first part of the season: facing Inter, currently fourth in Serie A Women, the team responded positively after conceding the opener from Bugeja by equalizing with a shot from outside the box by Čonč, Como then put sustained pressure on the Nerazzurre, who were forced to absorb attacks for much of the second half before eventually finding the decisive goal to seal a 2–1 win and progress to the next round. Mazzantini’s players came up against a top-tier Serie A side with European experience in the Women’s Europa Cup, yet significantly narrowed the gap through a performance built on sacrifice, unity and resilience. Constant support between teammates and across departments allowed Como to close down spaces, compete for every ball and leave nothing to chance, pushing until the very last second.

This pattern has also been evident in the league, where the Como 1907 Women are top of the table at the break, five points clear of Lumezzane. The BiancoBlu has the best attack with 29 goals scored and the best defense having conceded just five goals, seven fewer than the second-best defense in the league. After an initial draw against Bologna, Como 1907 racked up six consecutive victories before suffering their only setback of the season, a defeat away to Hellas Verona Women. Rather than undermining the team’s confidence, that loss proved to be a turning point, sparking another four straight wins heading into the break.

The road to the halfway point has certainly not been easy, despite what the numbers might suggest. In this first part of the season, the team overcame numerous challenges with the strength and character of a group whose greatest assets are unity and belief. From the unexpected narrow victory away to Brescia, who were second in the table at the time, to a 3-0 win against Venezia played in torrential rain at the Lambrone ground; from the 1-0 victory against Cesena, who were top of the table at the time, secured by Nichele’s goal, to the last-gasp home win against Trastevere thanks to Roberta Picchi’s decisive finish. Como 1907 Women have already experienced a range of emotions, proving themselves equal to every challenge they have faced so far.

Now the BiancoBlu can enjoy a well-earned break, with attention already turning to 18 January, when the championship will resume away to Vicenza Femminile. Como will approach the second half of the season ready to build on everything learned and experienced in the opening months.
