Como-Lecce: Match Preview
After the 2-0 win at Juventus, securing the Lariani’s first victory at the Bianconeri’s home since 1951, Como return to the familiar surroundings of the Giuseppe Sinigaglia to take on Eusebio Di Francesco’s Lecce. The BiancoBlu, currently sixth in the table, face a Lecce side in 17th place with 24 points, but one that has shown encouraging form in recent weeks. The Salento-based team won against Udinese and Cagliari before a hard-fought defeat to Inter, with the Nerazzurri only breaking through in the 75th minute. Como, currently on a run that has seen the team take four points from matches against Milan and Juventus, will meet a young and lively Lecce side, full of pace and technical quality. Aware of their opponents’ tenacity and athleticism, the BiancoBlu will be looking to continue their good form and pick up another important result at home.
Here are the words of Como 1907 head coach Cesc Fàbregas ahead of Como-Lecce:
“I think we’re going through a more mature phase. We’re getting used to playing against top sides, teams fighting to stay up, and those pushing for Europe. Everyone has their own objective, and ours is always the same: to try to win.
“I expect Lecce to be a determined side who come here looking for points. In Italy, every match is very competitive, so you have to prepare with calmness, humility and a great deal of hard work. Three points are three points, whoever you’re playing against.
“The team is currently calm, focused and working very hard. We’ve had a great week of training, and tomorrow I want to see the best possible Como on the pitch. From the first minute, we must think only about winning.”
Lecce
Eusebio Di Francesco’s team has found balance and identity in a 4-3-3 formation. During the winter transfer window, Lecce added two players who have quickly become key: Omri Gandelman and Walid Cheddira. Gandelman, who scored seven goals in 18 appearances in the first half of the season with KAA Gent, has made an immediate impact, scoring twice in eight games for Lecce. He has already found the net in wins against Udinese and Cagliari, showing himself to be a technically gifted midfielder with excellent movement and a strong left foot. Gandelman replaced Medon Berisha, who had started the season well with two goals and three assists but has been sidelined with injury for the last ten matches.
Cheddira, who arrived from Sassuolo, has quickly taken up the role of starting striker. His signing was necessary after Francesco Camarda’s injury, providing support alongside Nikola Stulic. Cheddira is a physical striker, good at holding up the ball and creating space for Lecce’s wingers. Di Francesco often supports the main striker with Argentine Santiago Pierotti on the right, while either Sottil or Banda play on the opposite flank.
Another key player for Lecce this season is Tiago Gabriel. The Portuguese centre-back, born in 2004, is third in Serie A for aerial duels won (104), first for defensive clearances (141), and eighth for interceptions (37). He is a composed player with a great character. Lecce are also an extremely physical side. Tiago Gabriel, Siebert, and Ngom are all over 190 cm, while Coulibaly, Gallo, Veiga, and Ramadani are all over 183 cm. This makes them dangerous on set pieces, strong in the midfield, and effective at winning back possession.
