Como-Napoli: Match Preview

A compelling fixture awaits at the Sinigaglia, as Como and Napoli meet on the shores of the lake in Matchday 35 of Serie A Enilive. Both sides arrive in good form: Como responded to their Coppa Italia defeat against Inter with an important away win at Genoa, while Napoli bounced back from a loss to Lazio with a convincing 4–0 victory over Cremonese. Napoli, who have recently welcomed several players back from injury, will travel with renewed confidence, despite a few absences. The Azzurri, with a strong run of results in recent weeks, continue their push towards their season objectives, while the BiancoBlu will look to build on the positive momentum gained last weekend. It will also be an interesting occasion on the touchline, as Cesc Fàbregas and Antonio Conte face each other once again following their earlier meetings this season.

Here are the words of Como 1907 head coach Cesc Fàbregas ahead of Como-Napoli:

“Napoli are a team that have grown significantly in recent years, both in Europe and in Italy. They’ve had an excellent season so far, and great credit goes to the squad and the manager. I think it will be a very good match between two teams that want to play good football, control possession, and approach the game with determination, courage and quality. It will be a great challenge.

“At this stage of the season, what we must do is give everything. If there are an extra hundred metres to run, we run them. Defensive solidity, focus and the right mentality can never be lacking. The immediate reaction after losing the ball is also crucial, and in the last match I saw a very positive response from the players.

“We’re having a good season and taking it game by game, aiming to finish as high up the table as possible. The players have improved a great deal, and we hope they can take another step or two forward next year, continuing to compete right to the end.”

Napoli

Napoli heads into the match against Como off the back of a dominant performance against Cremonese: in the 4-0 victory, the Azzurri registered 25 total shots and nine on target, playing a 3-4-2-1 formation that could be used again in Saturday’s match. In the last match, Antonio Conte opted for Kevin De Bruyne and Allison Santos behind Rasmus Hojlund, relying on an extremely effective duo in the attacking midfield. The Belgian, one of the most technically and tactically gifted players in all of Serie A, perfectly complements the vertical threat Hojlund brings to the team, while Allison Santos is capable of creating numerical superiority in the attacking phase thanks to his dribbling skills and ability to frequently beat his first marker.

In midfield, the Lobotka-McTominay duo will once again make a significant impact, with the former, as always, dictating the pace in possession and the latter proving to be a major threat both with long-range shots and runs into the penalty area, relying on his timing and physical presence. In addition to Rrahmani, who has just returned, Napoli could also welcome back captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo to the squad, while quality players such as Anguissa, Gilmour, Giovane, and Elmas could see playing time during the match. Politano and Gutierrez could operate on the flanks, the former with more pronounced attacking qualities, while the latter possesses rare defensive versatility: both will be involved in both attack and defense for the duration of their time on the field. Napoli is a solid, well-organized team with countless options at its disposal, all factors that reflect the second-place standing currently held by Conte’s squad.
