From Bondy to the Banks of Como: The Evolution of Jonathan Ikoné

Jonathan Ikoné’s journey from the suburbs of Paris to the picturesque landscapes of Como is a testament to his resilience and passion for football. Born on May 2, 1998, in Bondy, France, Ikoné’s early days were filled with street football, a pastime that, while thrilling, concerned his parents due to safety reasons. Recognising his budding talent, his father, Bama, took proactive steps to channel his son’s energy into a more structured environment. “My father found me a team and said, ‘Go there and play, have fun.’ He really loved football,” Ikoné reminisces, highlighting the pivotal role his father played in his formative years.

Ikoné’s admiration for football legends was evident from a young age. “I liked Ronaldinho, Robinho, and also Di Maria,” he shares, with a particular fondness for FC Barcelona, largely influenced by Ronaldinho’s mesmerizing play. This admiration translated into his style on the pitch, characterized by flair, agility, and creativity.

His professional journey began with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), where he showcased glimpses of his potential. Seeking more playing time, Ikoné embarked on a loan spell with Montpellier HSC, further honing his skills. However, it was his move to Lille OSC in 2018 that truly marked a turning point. At Lille, he played a pivotal role in their triumphant 2020–21 Ligue 1 campaign, etching his name in the annals of the club’s history.

The allure of Italian football beckoned next, leading Ikoné to Fiorentina in January 2022. While his time in Florence had its moments, the quest for consistent impact saw him make a significant move in January 2025. Ikoné joined Como 1907 on a loan deal with an option to buy, a transfer that garnered attention not just for the player but also for the managerial figure instrumental in bringing him on board.

Cesc Fàbregas, head coach of Como and decorated former midfield maestro, had faced Ikoné during his playing days. Reflecting on those encounters, Fàbregas remarked, “I’ve faced Ikoné as a player, and he seemed very strong to me. I believe a lot in him…” His belief in Ikoné’s abilities was a significant factor in the winger’s decision to join Como. “I spoke with Fàbregas, and he has given me a lot of confidence. I believe we share the same vision,” Ikoné acknowledges, emphasising the mutual respect and understanding between player and coach.

He continues: “I’m happy to be here. There’s a good group and we have a strong coach. He likes the team to play, and I like that style, so I’m happy,” he notes, appreciating the team’s cohesive dynamics.

Away from the pitch, Ikoné is calm, almost reserved. His routine before a match is consistent. “I always listen to music and play Royal Match,” he says. “Right now, I listen to Bouss, a French rapper. The song I play before matches is ‘Où je vais.’” When he’s not training or traveling, you’ll likely find him at home. “I like playing PlayStation — NBA with friends online. I also enjoy spa massages. I mostly stay at home.”

His love of basketball runs deep. “The NBA is my favourite. Before, it was Dallas. My player was Luka Dončić, but he left. Now I don’t know if I should follow him or stay. I have to decide.” If he weren’t a footballer? “NBA — basketball. I would have been a playmaker or a guard.”

He’s still waiting to explore the area. “I came once to the lake — just for a quick tour. I did a short boat ride and then went back to Florence. I didn’t see much,” he admits, laughing. “I’ll have to wait — it’s cold now. When it’s warmer, yes. I want to walk around and really get to know the city.”

The influence of family, especially his late father, remains a cornerstone of Ikoné’s ethos. “My father. He passed away not long ago. He was the one who got me into football,” he reflects, underscoring the deep bond they shared.

The advice he’s carried with him? “Never give up, work hard. Every effort pays off in the end. Keep pushing and give yourself the means to succeed.” The words have come from many sources — his parents, his brothers, even Kylian Mbappé’s father. “I’m someone who listens. I take everything in — even the bad — and try to figure out what’s best.”

He and Mbappé grew up together. “Yes, I played with him when we were young. He’s from Bondy, and his father was the coach. He was strong even as a kid, and you can still see it now in how he plays.” Do they still talk? “Sometimes we exchange messages, but he plays and I play, so we don’t have much time.”

As Ikoné continues his journey with Como, his blend of experience, skill, and determination positions him as a key figure in the team’s aspirations. With the backing of a coach who believes in his potential and a supportive team environment, the future looks promising for this talented winger.
