Genoa-Como: Match Preview

Nearly 10 days after the match against Sassuolo, Como 1907 return to Serie A action away to Genoa. On Sunday at 3:00 pm, the BiancoBlu will travel to face the side coached by Daniele De Rossi, currently 13th in the table with 39 points. The Rossoblù have won four of their last six league matches, including important victories over Roma and Sassuolo. Since De Rossi’s arrival on the bench, Genoa have climbed away from the more dangerous areas of the table, establishing themselves as a compact side capable of scoring and staying in games against any opponent, including teams at the top end of the standings. Sunday’s match at “Marassi” promises to be a tough one for Como, facing a forward line rich in options and quality. Cesc Fàbregas’ team will look to bring all their qualities to the pitch in an attempt to return to winning ways in Serie A, while Genoa will be aiming to secure mathematical safety.

Here are the words of Como 1907 head coach Cesc Fàbregas ahead of Genoa-Como:

“Genoa have matured a lot since the last time we saw them. Given the quality of their players, I believe they are a top-ten side. Daniele De Rossi is doing an excellent job, and I think he is the right coach for the way they want to play. They look like a complete team and we will need to prepare our players well, because it will be a very important match.

“The team is currently in good shape. They’re a courageous group, always striving for more, and periods like this are part of our individual and collective development. We need to be mentally prepared to deal with every situation in the right way.

“The team consistently shows a clear identity. They have a well-defined way of playing and a tactical approach capable of causing problems even for top sides with high-quality players, these are important progress. I believe this team can continue to grow in the coming years, improving in quality, physicality and consistency. We must continue along this path, because I believe it is the right one.”

Genoa

The Grifone are a side with plenty of quality, particularly in attack. In their usual 3-5-2 system, the two wing-backs, Norton-Cuffy on the right and Martín on the left, have been key throughout much of the season, providing width, driving forward down the flanks, and at times moving inside to add extra numbers in the final third and the penalty area. Similarly, Malinovskyi, who operates as the attacking midfielder in the 3-5-2, often pushes high into advanced areas during attacking phases, with the shape at times resembling more of a 3-4-2-1. The Ukrainian, who has scored six goals this season, is one of the most dangerous players available to Daniele De Rossi, both for his ability from distance and his creativity in setting up teammates. Genoa’s current top scorer is Lorenzo Colombo with seven goals, while Caleb Ekuban (four) and Jeff Ekhator (three) have also made important contributions. In attack, Baldanzi adds further quality, bringing strong technical ability and the capacity to operate in tight spaces, much like Messias.

With Norton-Cuffy looking to return from injury, Genoa could turn to Ellertsson on the right flank, back from suspension, as well as Frendrup, whose pace and work rate are key assets. Frendrup will operate just in front of the defence, providing protection and balance behind a physical and intense back three of Marcandalli, Ostigård and Vásquez. Ostigård, in particular, is also a real threat in attacking situations, especially from set pieces, having scored five goals this season. The side Como face on Sunday have a number of options at their disposal and will bring intensity, quality and a pragmatic approach to the match.
