Inter-Como: Match Preview

Inter and Como will meet for the fourth and final time this season tonight. With their most recent encounter taking place just over a week ago, Cristian Chivu and Cesc Fàbregas know one another’s sides inside out. Across their three previous meetings, both coaches have continually adjusted their tactical approaches in search of new ways to trouble the opposition. Now, under the lights at San Siro, Inter and Como will contest a place in the Coppa Italia final on May 13. Following a 0–0 draw at the Sinigaglia, the tie remains finely poised. For Inter, nine-time winners of the competition, this would be a 15th final appearance; while it would mark the Lariani's first ever participation in the final. The BiancoBlu will visit Inter for the second time this season. After a run of four matches without a win in March, Inter have responded impressively, recording three consecutive victories and extending their lead at the top of the league to twelve points.

Here are the words of Como 1907 Sporting Director Carlalberto Ludi ahead of Inter-Como:

“I think tomorrow’s match will mark a wonderful chapter in the history of the club, for the city of Como and for our supporters. For us, however, it remains a game to approach with our usual mindset: to go out and try to win, reach the final and, in doing so, write another chapter in our history.

It will be a very intense and carefully prepared challenge. We must continue to be the team we have shown ourselves to be in the past months: a group that wants to amaze, to surprise, to have fun and to create enthusiasm among teammates, staff and supporters.

I’m expecting a good match, where the players can embrace the atmosphere and fully appreciate this important milestone. From an emotional point of view, we will approach it with calmness, enthusiasm, positive energy and confidence, because that is who we are.”

Inter

The match at San Siro follows a tight first leg on March 3. A month and a half has passed since then, and both sides arrive in somewhat different circumstances. At Sinigaglia, Inter fielded an unfamiliar line-up: rather than deploying two strikers, Andy Diouf operated behind Esposito in a hybrid role between a number ten and a wide midfielder, working in the spaces around the penalty area.

On that match, Cristian Chivu left out Dimarco, Akanji and Barella. Dumfries was returning from injury, Lautaro Martínez was unavailable, and Thuram only featured from the bench. The resulting selection included several players capable of injecting intensity; such as Carlos Augusto, Frattesi, Diouf and Sučić, as well as physically imposing figures able to win duels and pose a threat from set pieces, including Bisseck, Acerbi, Bastoni and Esposito. The outcome was a closely contested match, short on attacking incision and evenly balanced in both possession and passing. Inter failed to register a shot on target, while Como managed just one.

For the return leg, Inter may opt for a line-up closer to the one used in their league meeting on April 12. With Lautaro Martínez still sidelined and Bastoni a doubt as he attempts to return from injury, Thuram and Esposito could once again lead the attack, supported by a more technically refined midfield trio of Barella, Çalhanoğlu and Zieliński, with Dumfries and Dimarco operating as wing-backs. In defence, the returning Bisseck could come in alongside Acerbi and Akanji.

Against the Nerazzurri, Como will need a near-flawless performance to overcome the challenge and secure a spot in the final.

Previous encounters

In the Coppa Italia, Inter and Como have faced each other 10 times. In that competition, the Nerazzurri have six wins and four draws. The BiancoBlu are therefore still searching for their first Coppa Italia victory against Inter.

Their last Coppa Italia meeting dates back to the 1991/92 season, when they faced each other in the round of 16. After a 2–2 draw at San Siro, Inter secured a 2–1 win at Sinigaglia to progress to the next round.
