Lazio-Como: Match Preview

Como and Lazio will close out the 21st matchday of Serie A Enilive, taking to the field in Monday evening’s late game. The Biancoblù come into the match on January 19 fresh off their 16th matchday catch-up against Milan, which saw the Rossoneri win 3-1 at the Sinigaglia despite an excellent performance from the hosts. The Biancocelesti, meanwhile, won their last league match at the Bentegodi thanks to an own goal by Nelsson, earning three valuable points.

Monday night’s match will be crucial for both teams: Como, on 34 points, are looking to keep pace with Roma and Juventus at all costs, while Lazio want to continue picking up points and move closer to the European qualification places. Despite a transfer window that saw them lose two pillars of the team, Mateo Guendouzi and Taty Castellanos, the Biancocelesti quickly brought in high-level replacements in Kenneth Taylor and Petar Ratkov, both of whom already featured in the match at Verona.

Here are the words of Como 1907 head coach Cesc Fàbregas ahead of Lazio-Como:

“Monday brings another important test in our journey. This match requires continuity, calm, and confidence in our style of play. We need to stay composed, keep our feet on the ground, and build on the good football we have shown as a team.

“The group is growing, but we know there is still much to improve. Now the most important thing is to lift our heads quickly and turn frustration into positive energy, because another crucial match awaits us. For us, it is not just about the result. What matters is developing the mentality and unity that represent Como 1907.”

“Lazio are a team with a clear identity and a lot of strength. It will be a beautiful match between two sides with similar styles. Every three days we have a new opportunity to grow together. This is the spirit we want to carry forward. Never settle, always move forward together.”

Lazio

The Biancocelesti are having a strong season, with coach Maurizio Sarri managing to get the best out of every player at his disposal. With 16 goals conceded, Lazio currently have the second-best defence in Serie A (tied with Como, Milan, and Juventus), behind only Roma. In Sarri’s classic 4-3-3 formation, Marusic and Pellegrini are fullbacks with great stamina and intensity, able to contribute in both attack and defence throughout the game. Central defenders Gila and Romagnoli are enjoying excellent seasons—especially the Spanish defender, who is among the top performers in Serie A at his position and was named man of the match against Verona.

With Guendouzi gone and Rovella making his return in Verona for the first time since August, Cataldi will most likely serve as the midfield anchor, with Vecino and Taylor playing as interior midfielders. While Vecino is a well-known player, dangerous for his runs and impact on set pieces, Kenneth Taylor made his Biancocelesti debut last week. The Dutchman, who arrived from Ajax, scored 15 goals and provided eight assists in all competitions for the Amsterdam club last season. He’s a player with great technique and a nose for goal, and could become even more effective in Sarri’s system.

In attack, Lazio focus on maximising the runs of their wingers: Zaccagni, Isaksen, Pedro, and Cancellieri are all very strong in the final third, effective at cutting inside and either going for goal or setting up the final pass. In the centre, Noslin is a more mobile and dynamic striker, often used to create uncertainty for defenders, while Ratkov is a physical presence in the box but also possesses excellent technical skills to link up play. Lazio are an extremely dangerous team, full of high-level players who will do everything they can to get the better of their opponents at the Olimpico.

Previous encounters

Lazio and Como have faced each other 15 times in the league. The hosts have won ten times, with four draws and just one victory for Como. The match on January 10 ended 1-1, with Dia opening the scoring and Cutrone equalising in the second half.

Como’s first and only league victory at the Olimpico against Lazio dates back to the 1951/52 season, when goals from Baldini and Cattaneo secured a 2-1 win.
