Nico Paz and Assane Diao Ask the Questions

Two young talents, two different paths, one shared ambition to help Como 1907 thrive in Serie A. Nicolás Paz, a creative midfielder from Real Madrid, and Assane Diao, a dynamic forward from Real Betis, have quickly formed a strong bond on and off the pitch. In this exclusive interview, they ask each other the questions, revealing their experiences, first impressions, and the moments that have shaped their careers so far.

Serie A & International Football

Diao: Nico, you went from Real Madrid to Como. What has that journey been like for you?

Paz: Well, the truth is that it has been a very big change. Playing in Madrid at the youth level is one thing, but stepping into the first division, competing against top-level players in Serie A, is another. It was a difficult transition at first, but also a beautiful one. I’m settling in well, and I’m eager to keep growing.

And you? You’ve had an impressive start in Como. What do you enjoy most about playing here?

Diao: Yeah, I’ve started well, and I think both the club and I are happy with that. What I love the most is how close the team is. It really feels like a family, and you can see that in the way we play. That makes a big difference for me—I feel confident and free to express myself on the pitch.

Diao: Your father was a professional footballer. How has his experience influenced your career?

Paz: A lot. The fact that he’s been through the same things I’m experiencing now means he knows exactly how to guide me. His advice keeps me grounded and helps me stay focused. Having him in my corner is a big advantage.

And who was your football idol when you were a child?

Diao: Messi, without a doubt. But if I had to pick another player who I really loved watching, it would be Isco. The magic he had on the ball was incredible. And you got to play with him, right?

Paz: Yeah, I did! It was amazing. I loved Francisco back then, too.

Diao: You assisted Messi in your Argentina debut. What was that like?

Paz: Honestly, it was the best moment of my life so far in football. Assisting the best player in history on my debut—it was surreal. Because of Leo’s age, I didn’t think we’d ever get to play together, but it happened. One of the best things that has ever happened to me, for sure.

Paz: You’ve played against some top defenders already. Who has been the toughest opponent so far?

Diao: Serie A is full of great defenders, but if I had to choose, I’d say Kolašinac, Di Lorenzo, and Theo Hernández. The level here is really high. Every game is a challenge.

Life in Como & Off the Pitch

Diao: Have you learned any Italian since you arrived? What’s your favorite Italian sentence?

Paz: I’m still learning, but I understand almost everything. Speaking is a bit harder—I still make some mistakes. But my favorite phrase? Sei brutto (you’re ugly)!

What about you? What do you like most about living in Como so far?

Diao: It’s such a peaceful place. Everywhere you go, you see the lake, the beautiful buildings—it’s spectacular. I love it here.

Have you discovered any local dish you particularly like? What’s your favorite Italian food?

Paz: I don’t think I’ve tried a real local dish yet, but I eat lasagna almost every day. I already loved it in Spain, but here? It’s on another level.

If you weren’t a football player, what would you be?

Diao: I have no idea! As a kid, whenever they asked me what I wanted to be, I always said “a footballer.” And if not that, then… nothing! I never really had a backup plan.

What’s something people don’t know about you?

Paz: I guess a lot, because no one really knows my private life. But one thing? I’m actually quite thoughtful with gestures and presents. I pay attention to details, and I like being thoughtful with the people I love.

Diao: I’ll be waiting for my thoughtful gestures then.

Paz: I said people I love, you know? Ahaha!

Music, Superstitions & Training Ground Battles

Diao: What song or genre of music can’t be missing from your pre-match playlist?

Paz: It depends on the mood, but usually Bad Bunny—especially his new album. I also listen to Rels B and Don Patricio. What about you?

Diao: Same! I like Spanish artists, but I also enjoy electronic music before games. It gets me hyped.

Paz: Do you have any pre-match rituals or superstitions?

Diao: I always pray before games. I’m very religious, and trusting in God’s help gives me peace before stepping onto the pitch.

Paz: You’re doing well so far—better keep praying!

Diao: If we were to form a band with three other teammates, who would you pick and what instrument would you play?

Paz: Easy—Álex, Maxi, and you. And you? You’d play the drums, obviously. It’s the easiest—you just hit things! Since you’re not the smartest… ahaha.

What was your first impression of me?

Diao: At first, I thought you were a bit shy. But that lasted two days. By the third day, you were already messing around, joking with everyone—especially picking on me. But honestly, you’re a great guy. A 10/10 as a person.

Diao: And you? What was your first impression of me?

Paz: I thought, “This guy is definitely a clown.” But actually, you’re a really good kid. A little bit of a troublemaker, but always a great teammate.

The Final Word

Diao: Let’s be honest now. When we do shooting competitions after training, who wins?

Paz: I think you’re digging your own grave with this one. You know who wins. I know who wins. I’m the king—end of story.

Diao: We’ll let the cameras decide next time!
