Waves of Inspiration: Como Musician Alessandro Martire’s Journey and the Floating Stage That Made Him a Star
Lake Como, with its crystal-clear waters and lush landscapes, has long been a muse for artists. For pianist and composer Alessandro Martire, it’s not just home—it’s the heartbeat of his music. Born in Como in 1992, Martire’s journey from a young piano enthusiast to an international sensation is as enchanting as his music.
Martire’s love affair with the piano began at the tender age of 11. By 15, he was not only playing but also composing his own pieces, drawing deep inspiration from the natural beauty surrounding him. He recalls, “When I started to play piano and compose, I felt a connection with nature, especially the nature of Como.” This bond with his environment has become a cornerstone of his career and the inspiration which saw him propelled onto the international stage.
A Floating Stage and Waves of Creativity
The idea of performing on a floating stage was a natural progression for Martire, who sought to harmonize music with nature. In 2019, Martire founded the Lake Endless Joy (LEJ) Festival, aiming to elevate the cultural profile of the Como region and celebrate its artistic spirit.
It was here that he introduced the “Floating Moving Concert” and his “Waves” piano, a groundbreaking instrument Martire co-designed with architect Claudio Bargna. This curved piano, crafted by artisans from Cantù, reflects the gentle ripples of Lake Como, embodying the fusion of music and design. Martire notes, “Combining design and music was a wonderful experience, allowing me to unite two great passions.”
Performing on a mirrored platform that glided across the waters created a seamless blend of sound and scenery. This innovative concept allowed audiences to experience music in a profoundly immersive way, surrounded by the lake’s serene beauty. Martire describes the floating performance as a way to create an intimate dialogue between the music, the audience, and the natural world around him—a trio in perfect harmony.
From Local Roots to Global Stages
Martire’s innovative approach has propelled him onto the international stage. His “Flames of Joy World Tour” took him to ten countries, including Ethiopia, Australia, and China, showcasing his unique compositions to diverse audiences. His ability to adapt his music to resonate with different cultures has become a hallmark of his career. Collaborations with artists like violinist Anastasiya Petryshak have further enriched his performances, blending classical and contemporary styles.
In 2021, Martire took his passion for connecting music and nature to new heights with his “Ice Waves” performance on the frozen Lake Staz in St. Moritz. Accompanied by young figure skater Felicitas Joy Fischer, he created an enchanting performance that turned the icy expanse into a temporary concert hall. Martire reflects, “The experience was surreal—it was about making music a living, breathing part of the environment.”
A Universal Language of Music
For Martire, music transcends linguistic barriers. He emphasizes, “The power of the piano is that it is a universal language.” This belief has guided his global tours, allowing him to connect with audiences across cultures through the shared experience of music. His performances speak to universal emotions, offering listeners an escape into a realm where words are unnecessary, and melodies convey it all.
A Lifelong Passion for Como
Music is Martire’s first love, but his roots in Como mean he carries another passion close to his heart: football. Speaking with BLU, he shares, “I am a very big fan of Como 1907, of course! First of all, I am from here, and all of my family follows Como 1907. When I was a child, I went to see the games, and I am very proud of the team and that we are back in Serie A.”
Martire’s journey from his hometown of Como to stages across the globe is a testament to his creativity and vision. Yet, no matter how far his music takes him, he remains grounded in the lakeside beauty that shaped him. His work embodies the harmony of art and environment, reminding us all of the power of creativity rooted in a sense of place.
