Adriana Martín at Como 1907 Women

Como 1907 Women’s Team is pushing hard to secure promotion from Eccellenza to Serie C. To strengthen their squad during the January transfer window, the club sought out seasoned veterans to lead the charge. Among the latest signings is Spanish forward Adriana Martín, an experienced player with an extensive career in international football.

Born in La Puebla de Valverde, Aragon, Spain in 1986, Adriana started playing football at five years old. Her passion for football was inspired by watching her father play amateur football games each weekend as a child. By the time she was 15, she had already made her professional debut with Barcelona. From there, she built an impressive resume, playing for top clubs like Espanyol, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea Women, and Lazio, as well as making her mark in the U.S. with Sky Blue FC and Western New York Flash.

Adriana has had huge success at club level, particularly in Spain. Throughout her career, she has won three Spanish league titles and two national cups and she was also the league’s top scorer in 2007, 2010, and 2015. These achievements caught the attention of Como 1907’s coaching staff, who saw her as the perfect addition to their roster.

Heather O’Reilly, World Cup Champion and advisor to Como 1907 Women’s team praised Adriana’s impact saying, “Adriana is a massive addition to our team. She brings Spanish National Team and Champions League experience and has proven recently that she still has quite an impact on games.” She added, “…someone like Adriana will be an incredible addition to our attacking unit and I’m delighted with her joining Como 1907’s Women’s team”.

BLU recently sat down with Adriana to learn more about her career and what drew her to Como 1907.

What was it that drew you to Como and this project?

I was convinced from the first phone call to be honest . The long term project here is very thrilling for me as a player. It’s an honour to have already pulled on the Como jersey, I am very happy to be here.  Long term they want to be a successful team so for me it was a very easy decision.

Do you have any specific goals for this season?

I want to win every game and I really want to win the league. I don’t think about anything else, I focus on scoring and giving each game my best.

Outside of football, what are your hobbies?

I am a pretty relaxed person. I have a dog who has stolen my heart so I go on a lot of walks. It’s really important for me to be close to family, so I am constantly on the phone with them. If I can be on the phone speaking to them for two hours I am happy. I also like going to the movies. I don’t love going out so I’m happy staying in.

What are your impressions of where the women’s game is today?

What’s great is that women’s football, specifically Italian football, is growing, similarly to how it’s growing in Spain. The level of play in all divisions of Italian football is extremely high. As women we need to continue working hard even if there are closed doors and continue to follow our dreams and continue fighting without lowering our arms.

What is your advice for young players?

Follow your dreams. If you want to become a professional football player, go for it. I even have a tattoo on my arm that no one can tell you you can’t become a professional. It’s not an easy path to take, and there will be people who tell you you can’t and shouldn’t be but if you believe in it, you have to follow it because it’s your passion.
