Assane Diao: A New Chapter Begins with Senegal Debut
It’s been a season of firsts for Assane Diao—and this weekend marked perhaps the biggest one yet.
The 19-year-old Como 1907 forward made his senior international debut for Senegal in a 0–0 draw against Sudan, capping off a whirlwind year in which his star has rapidly risen across club and country. For Diao, born in Senegal and raised in Spain, the moment was steeped in pride and significance.
“I’m really happy about this first call-up. My family and I are very proud of what it means,” Diao said following the match. “Receiving my first call-up to the Senegal senior national team is a huge honour for both me and my family.”
Having previously represented Spain at youth level, Diao also took a moment to acknowledge the role La Roja played in his development: “I want to thank the Spanish national team for everything they have given me and for all the support over the past year. It was a privilege to be part of the Spanish squad, and I’m truly grateful for everything they’ve done for me.”
It’s a poignant duality for a player shaped by two footballing cultures.
Just a couple of days after his debut, Diao took another major step: he was named in Senegal’s starting XI for the first time and played the full 90 minutes in last night’s 2–0 win over Togo. It was a milestone performance—not just for his time on the pitch, but for the company he kept. Guided by his idol, Sadio Mané, Diao delivered a composed and confident display, showing maturity well beyond his years. For the teenager, sharing the field with one of Africa’s greatest was both surreal and inspirational.
Since arriving in Serie A this season, the young attacker has quickly established himself as one to watch—blending pace, technical skill, and an eye for goal that has turned heads not just in Italy, but across the international stage.
His call-up is a testament not only to his individual progress but also to Como’s emerging reputation as a nurturing ground for elite talent.
Diao returns to club duty this week, as Como prepare to face Empoli on March 29. With his first international cap now under his belt, the stage is set for the next act in what’s fast becoming a breakout year for the teenage sensation.
