Como end the season by hosting Inter at the Sinigaglia

On Friday 23 May, Como 1907 will take to the pitch at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia to play Inter in the 38th and final match of the Serie A Enilive season. With a historic season behind them as newly-promoted team, the Larians are now mathematically in tenth position in the standings and are looking for the 50th point to end the season with one of the best recent results among the teams that have risen from Serie B. Inter arrive in Como with a chance to win the championship with only one objective: to seek the three points and hope for good news from Napoli.

“We’ll go out there and play to win, as we always do and as the team has consistently shown on the pitch. You can’t win every time, but the ambition to take all three points must always be there.

“Every team has its flaws, but Inter are the best side in Serie A and one of the strongest in Europe. The real challenge will be bringing the match to our level, not theirs. If we want to reach their level, it starts with games like this. We played a great match in the first leg. Tomorrow, we’ll need to be ourselves from the start and try to bring the game home. I expect Inter to be in their best form.

“With Iovine and Reina’s retirement, we’re losing two key leaders. I have huge admiration for both. They were crucial in holding the group together during difficult times, when few believed in us. They’ve given so much, not just to me as a coach, but above all to this club.”

Recent clashes

Inter and Como have faced each other 27 times in Serie A: Inter have won 18 times, Como have won six times, and there have been three draws. In the first leg, played at the San Siro on 23 December, Inter won 2–0 thanks to goals from Carlos Augusto and Marcus Thuram.

Como have won only one of their last 16 league matches against Inter (three draws, 12 defeats), and have not beaten the Nerazzurri at home since 1985. Since then, they have suffered three consecutive defeats at the Sinigaglia.

Players to watch

The spotlight in Como is on Gabriel Strefezza, who has scored in three of the last four matches (against Genoa, Parma and Cagliari), and Patrick Cutrone, the season’s top scorer with seven goals, five of which were scored at home. Maxence Caqueret is also in excellent form, having scored in two consecutive matches.

Nico Paz has had a decisive impact in midfield, scoring six goals and providing eight assists; he is one of only two midfielders in Serie A to have exceeded the 5+5 threshold in both categories, alongside Çalhanoglu. In the midfield, Lucas Da Cunha’s creative contribution also stands out; he is the Lariani’s leader for passes in the opponent’s half of the field (872).

On the Inter side, keep an eye on Marcus Thuram (14 goals), the Nerazzurri’s top scorer, who is chasing a personal best for goals in a season. Meanwhile, Lautaro Martínez, who has scored 12 goals so far this season, is aiming to finish with another goal.

There have been solid defensive performances from Yann Bisseck (three goals) and Carlos Augusto, who has already scored against Como in the first leg. Nicolò Barella is also of note: he played for Como in the 2015/16 Serie B season and, with 3 goals and 6 assists, is close to his fourth consecutive season with double-digit contributions.
