With their home victory over Roma now behind them, Como returns to the field at Sinigaglia, this time for Sunday’s 12:30 p.m. match. The three points earned on the shores of the lake against the Giallorossi have propelled Cesc Fabregas’s team to fourth place in the standings with 54 points, as part of a four-game winning streak in the league. Pisa now visits Sinigaglia, riding high on a significant 3-1 home victory over Cagliari—the Tuscan side’s second of the season. Oscar Hiljemark’s team sits in last place in the standings with 18 points, tied with Hellas Verona, but certainly has momentum on its side after securing a win that had eluded them since December 7, at home against Cremonese. Despite their last-place standing, under both Alberto Gilardino and Oscar Hiljemark, the Tuscan side has been a combative team, capable of earning draws against Atalanta (twice), Fiorentina, Lazio, and Milan, proving on those occasions to be a well-organised side, able to neutralise opponents’ attacking manoeuvres effectively. Following last January’s match at the Nerazzurri’s home ground, which ended 0-3 in favour of the Lariani, the two teams face off again, this time in Como.
Here are the words of Como 1907 head coach Cesc Fàbregas ahead of Como-Pisa:
“I would like to say publicly that we have lost someone who was very important to the club and to all of us: Michael Bambang Hartono. I would like to send my thoughts to his family and the Hartono family for everything they have given to our city and our club.
“The match against Pisa will be a crucial one, very different from the ones we’ve faced recently, and we must approach it with the utmost focus. They are fighting to stay up, and all the players are hoping to avoid relegation, rightly so.
“They performed very well in their last match against Cagliari, even whilst down to ten men. This shows they are a resilient side that never gives up. We’ll need to start strongly, as always, with the right intensity, desire and hunger, bringing the quality and mentality to deliver a great performance and secure the win, which is crucial for us.”
Pisa
The Nerazzurri, led by Oscar Hiljemark, have primarily opted for a 3-5-2 or 3-4-2-1 formation, which at certain points in the match has shifted to a 3-4-3, using attacking wingers with strong dribbling skills to beat defenders and create numerical superiority. Against Como, however, Hiljemark will have to deal with several absences: forward Durosinmi was sent off against Cagliari and will not be part of the match; midfielder Aebischer is also out due to suspension, as is Marin, who left last Sunday’s match injured—absences that add to that of Cuadrado, who is also sidelined.
This season, Pisa has largely ceded control of the game to their opponents, focusing instead on exploiting their ball-winning abilities and physicality to disrupt the opposition’s build-up play and strike on the counterattack, often channelling the play down the flanks. The Tuscan side has fullbacks with good pace and intensity, such as Tourè, as well as technically gifted players like Angori, in addition to more creative options like Samuel Iling-Junior, who possesses excellent ability to break away and cut into the penalty area.
Up front, Moreo will likely start; he is the team’s top scorer with six goals and is fresh off a goal against Cagliari. Tramoni also makes a significant contribution as a player who can operate both in more central areas of the field to support the forwards and on the wings. Coach Hiljemark also has young players at his disposal who have shown promise this season, such as defender Francesco Coppola and midfielder Ebenezer Akinsanmiro. The Lariani will therefore face an aggressive team, highly focused on ball recovery, that will do everything possible to create density and clog up Como’s passing lanes as much as possible.
Previous encounters
In Como, there have been 15 previous matches between the Lariani and the Nerazzurri. The record stands at five wins for Como, three for Pisa, and seven draws.
The last Serie A match between Como and Pisa at the Sinigaglia Stadium dates back to the 1988–1989 season; in the 1–1 draw, Simone scored for the Biancoblù and Bolchi for the Tuscan side.
