Como-Torino: Match Preview
Back from their impressive away performance in Rome against Lazio, the Biancoblù return to action in Saturday’s early kick-off, hosting Torino at the Sinigaglia. After their home defeat to Milan, Como responded immediately, recording a resounding 3–0 win in the final match of Matchday 21 in Serie A Enilive.
Now the Granata arrive in Como. Torino, after an excellent Coppa Italia win over Roma, lost to the same opponents in the league at home five days later. They have not won in the league since 4 January, when they beat Hellas Verona 3–0 at the Bentegodi, and have since suffered three consecutive Serie A defeats.
Despite this, Torino are not to be underestimated. They have shown they can beat Roma and Napoli this season, and have also drawn with Fiorentina, Lazio, Bologna and Juventus. They have strong individual quality and several talented players capable of deciding games with sudden moments of class.
Here are the words of Como 1907 head coach Cesc Fàbregas ahead of Como-Torino:
“In Rome we played with five midfielders who were constantly moving, creating dynamism through their combinations. It is a style of football I like because it takes away the opponents’ reference points. Our choices always depend on the type of opponent we’re facing. We study every detail to find the best solution for each match, while keeping our identity intact, that’s what gives continuity to our game and our path.
“Baturina is doing well. He is an intelligent and versatile player, but his growth needs to be managed calmly. He is integrating into the group really well. He is hungry, has quality, and is helping the team. When there is trust, everything becomes simpler.
“Torino are an experienced team, and we know them very well. They are a complete side with a lot of experience. They need points, and so do we. It will be a head-to-head match. We will need to perform well, as always, to win.”
Torino
Torino have recently found greater balance in a 3-5-2 system and rely heavily on one-on-one situations out wide and in attack. Ngonge, Adams, Aboukhlal and Lazaro are all skilled at beating their man and creating overloads.
With 34 goals conceded, Torino currently have the joint-worst defence in Serie A, level with Hellas Verona. This season, the Granata have used three different defensive combinations featuring Ismajli, Coco, Tameze, Maripan and Masina, physical defenders who have struggled against teams that play at speed, with frequent rotations and runs in behind.
In midfield, with Torino’s breakout player of the season, Gineitis, having picked up an injury against Roma, there could be space for Vlasic, Ilkhan and Casadei. Vlasic and Casadei are key figures, especially going forward. Vlasic starts as a wide midfielder but often drifts inside to operate as a number ten, while Casadei is a major threat in the box thanks to his physique and natural timing. Ilkhan is also earning more minutes, operating as a number six in front of the defence and setting the tempo.
Up front, head coach Marco Baroni has recently leaned on the Adams and Ngonge pairing, two dynamic players who offer few fixed reference points, strong in the dribble and dangerous when attacking the penalty area, even from wider positions. Torino also have plenty of attacking options, including Simeone (the club’s joint top scorer alongside Vlasic with five goals), Zapata, and Njie (born in 2005), who is starting to pick up minutes and has already shown he can make an impact, as seen in Verona.
Against Como, new signing Rafa Obrador, a Spanish left winger who arrived from Benfica, could also feature.
