Fiorentina-Como: Match Preview
Just three days after the win over Torino at the Sinigaglia, the BiancoBlu are back in action for the Coppa Italia round of 16. Building on the momentum of their strongest Serie A performance to date, the Lariani will now face Fiorentina, with a place in the quarter-finals against Napoli at stake.
Despite a defeat to Cagliari at the Franchi on Saturday, the Viola had put together four positive league results and remain a dangerous opponent, strengthened further by their winter signings and a renewed defensive balance.
It will be Fiorentina’s first Coppa Italia fixture of the season, while the Lariani have already earned their place in the last 16 with wins over Südtirol and Sassuolo. A challenging test awaits, one to be approached with focus, respect and ambition.
Fiorentina
In their last four league games, Fiorentina, under coach Vanoli, have switched to a 4-3-3 formation, lining up with Dodo, Comuzzo, Pongracic, and Gosens, providing more balance and reducing the gaps in defense with the help of the midfielders. Similarly, the most popular midfield trio at the moment consists of Mandragora, Fagioli, and Ndour. The Viola are a team that rely on the technical skills and individual talent of their players to dictate the game. Fagioli is proving to be one of the most in-form midfielders in the league, with excellent playmaking skills and the ability to speed up the game with his ball control. Alongside him, Mandragora is third in Serie A among midfielders for goals scored, with six, and is capable of making a significant impact on games with his scoring ability. On the other hand, Ndour is a physical player who provides balance in midfield. The Viola have numerous options in this department, such as Brescianini, who scored against Cagliari on Saturday, Fabbian, Nicolussi-Caviglia, and Fazzini.
Up front, switching to a three-man attack, Fiorentina have added two international-caliber wingers in Jack Harrison and Manor Solomon, players who are strong at beating their man, creating numerical superiority, and attacking space. Albert Gudmundsson is also finding space on the wing in a somewhat hybrid position that sees him start from the outside and move centrally, occupying a central position that better suits his natural characteristics. With Moise Kean still sidelined, the main striker position could be filled by Gudmundsson himself or Roberto Piccoli. Fiorentina are still working on this new formation, undergoing changes both tactically and in terms of the squad, given the latest additions in the transfer market. The Viola are a very dangerous team, with numerous quality players at their disposal.
Previous encounters
There have been eight previous encounters between the two teams in the Coppa Italia. The record shows five wins for the home side, one draw, and two wins for Como. Como’s only victory in Florence in the Coppa Italia dates back to the 2001/02 season, when, after a 2-0 win in the first leg of the second round at the Sinigaglia, the BiancoBlu won 2-0 in the second leg thanks to goals from Oliveira and Taldo.
