Como-Sassuolo: Match Preview

Fresh from Monday night’s 5–1 win in Turin, Como return to the pitch after just four days, hosting Sassuolo at the Sinigaglia on Friday evening at 20:45. The Lariani, full of confidence after a strong away performance and five goals scored, will face a Sassuolo side coming off two positive results.

Before the international break, Sassuolo earned an impressive 3–0 victory at Atalanta, and on Monday they rescued a point against Pisa thanks to a 95th-minute equaliser from Thorstvedt. Friday’s match at the Sinigaglia promises to be an exciting match between two sides sitting sixth and ninth in the table, separated by only four points.

Here are the words of Como 1907 head coach Cesc Fàbregas ahead of Como–Sassuolo:

“Our aim is to become an increasingly complete team, one that can dominate, but also adapt, read the moments, and find different solutions. Growing as a group also means experiencing new situations, and not being afraid to take risks. We have big ambition: to improve every day and go as far as we possibly can.

“Sassuolo are a team that play bold, attacking football, with strong wide players, quality in attack, and a very clear game plan. I like the way they approach matches. They’re having an excellent season, and it promises to be an open, technical game; a pleasure to play.

“Against Torino we saw important signs: hunger and determination to make a difference in every detail. But now comes the hardest part: making that our standard, week after week. The difference is made by those who come on, change the game, and feel that urge to challenge the opponent. Consistency comes from that.”

Sassuolo

Sassuolo have been very productive in attack this season: forwards Pinamonti and Berardi sit eighth and seventeenth in the expected-goals rankings, and both have converted well, each scoring four goals so far, placing them joint second in the league’s top scorer ranking. After a challenging start to the campaign, Fabio Grosso’s team have found a good balance and are proving competitive against any opponent.

Their three-man midfield, usually formed by Ismaël Koné, Nemanja Matić and Kristian Thorstvedt, is one of the team’s major strengths. Koné and Matić offer defensive solidity and calmness in possession, while Thorstvedt operates higher up the pitch, often acting as the team’s main creative outlet.

Sassuolo’s midfield, which ranks third in Serie A for blocked passes, forms the base of their attacking play. The team often builds through wide areas: once the ball is recovered in midfield, it is frequently worked to Berardi on the right or Laurienté/Fadera on the left.

Another standout performer this season has been centre-back Tarik Muharemovic, who has impressed with his physical presence and marking ability.

Previous encounters

Como and Sassuolo have met only once in their history, in the second round of the Coppa Italia back in September 24. On that occasion, at the Sinigaglia, the Lariani won 3–1 thanks to a brace from Jesús Rodríguez and a goal from Tasos Douvikas. The victory allowed Como to advance to the next round of the competition, which continues in January with a match against Fiorentina.
